About

I live in Acton Bridge, Cheshire and trained as a chemical engineer, working in the chemical industry for 33 years. I subsequently had the opportunity for a second career pursuing my interest of photography and in particular landscape photography.

My website is called “Evocative Landscapes” as I want to encourage those who look at the photographs to see the beauty, subtlety and drama of the world around them

I find being outdoors photographing, often at the extremes of the day and in all sorts of conditions, very challenging, but also relaxing and humbling. To see the sun appearing and lighting the landscape, when you are may be the only person around, makes for very special moments. As a Christian, it gives me an extra appreciation of God’s creation and love. I am very privileged to have experienced some amazing scenes on photographic outings and it gives me great pleasure to be able to share these images.

I have taken photographs from an early age and before moving to Zambia in 1974 I bought my first ‘proper’ camera – a Pentax spotmatic single lens reflex (SLR). This opened my world to interchangeable lenses and challenges such as wildlife photography in the African bush - no autofocus, or auto metering or zoom lens etc.

My interest in photography grew but stalled with increasing family commitments. It was reignited by opportunities to travel with work and taking the family on some more adventurous holidays.
I was basically self taught, reading photography books and magazines, supplemented by a City and Guilds course at Mid Cheshire College. A significant event was attending a workshop led by Charlie Waite in the Lake District in typical Lakeland weather – wet! Charlie encouraged us to photograph whatever the conditions and he opened the mind to all sorts of possibilities.

Landscape photography can be lonely but also very emotional. Many shots require planning and effort to get to the location at the right time. I have a strong attachment to photos taken in such conditions and the ones which were most challenging have a special place in my memory, for example, violent conditions in the Outer Hebrides , midges in the Highlands or sand flies in New Zealand!

I prefer to photograph landscapes during the well known “ golden hours” around sunrise and sunset and during changeable weather. Fortunately UK weather is often changeable and although there are many frustrating times waiting for good light, when it does come it can be dramatic.

I have always used Pentax SLR equipment progressing through several film cameras and more recently to digital . I also use a Pentax 645N medium format film camera and a Hasselblad Xpan.
All the photos on the website have been taken with a Pentax K10d , K20d and K5 cameras. I will be adding images from other formats in due course including the Pentax 645D.

My philosophy is to get the photograph correct at capture and to minimise post processing work. I use Lee ND graduated filters frequently, as I find these enable a balanced histogram to be achieved more easily. I shoot raw images in Adobe DNG format and process them in Adobe Lightroom.

I very much hope that you enjoy looking at these photographs. Prints can be ordered for any of the images and please use the contact page.
